Blog
This blog serves as an outlet for us to vent our misgivings about entering this unholy partnership with one another. In case you don't know, we all live and work together - that's four men, all with different understandings of what constitutes basic hygiene, encased by four walls against constant torrential downpour. Sort of like Big Brother, with chavs replaced by arrogant sociopaths...
In all seriousness - read this blog if you want to be kept up to date on website development milestones and the various shenanigans we get up to in our time together.
A long-awaited update, and the act of balancing by Erik - Saturday, 20 February 2010
In the bustle of finalising our citizen journalism platform (which I can now with great pleasure announce will be called ViewsInc.com!), the maintenance of our corporate website has rather ironically taken a back seat, so this post is an attempt to remedy just this deplorable oversight.
Significant changes and developments are taking (and have taken) place in the PhaseSpace Headquarters. First and foremost is the news that we are in the process of co-operating with a web design firm to apply the final touches to the aesthetic aspect of our site (the functionality having been ready for some time), and this will essentially be the final hurdle in terms of launching a beta version of the website, so spirits are high (as are stress levels).
Due to the need to strech our finances further (the Achilles' heel of most start-ups) we have decided to get other jobs, which has unfortunately led to a corporate diaspora, with only two members remaining at our initial base in Manchester. I have returned to Brussels to work for an accounting firm, and while some degree solace can be found in Brussels bars and Continental cuisine (alas, no significant improvement on the weather front), the fact remains that it is no easy task to balance a full time day job with the demands of setting up a website (something which perhaps in part explains why this blog has been dormant for nearly a month).
All the same, we press on, bloodied, but as yet unbowed. Expect to hear the fanfare of our lauch soon!
Content and Design by Mike - Monday, 25 January 2010
Things are heating up at HQ as the time until launch declines. The site is functionally complete now and the focus has turned to acquiring a decent design company to give the site visual polish and a distinctive logo. Meanwhile, populating the launch version with adequate content is another priority, equating to more emails begging friends and family to contribute anything they can. If anyone reading this entry has an idea for a article (it can be about anything, promise!) please send your ideas or the finished product to mike@phasespace.co.uk.
Merry Christmas from Team PhaseSpace by Mike - Friday, 25 December 2009
On this joyous day of the year, we at Team Phasespace wish to convey our warmest regards to all of our loved ones and loyal supporters. I'd like to send a special thankyou out to all those who have filled in our survey on internet habits. Your views have been very helpful. All the best in this holiday season.
Life in Stretford by Mike - Wednesday, 25 November 2009
By choosing the suburb of Manchester known as Stretford as our base of operations, we at PhaseSpace have joined such dignitaries as L. S. Lowry, Jay Kay of Jamiroquai and Emmeline Pankhurst and will no doubt eclipse them all in fame (well, maybe not Jay Kay, but we can't expect miracles). Although there are no restaurants as such in Stretford, there is a glut of deeply mediocre Chinese take-outs. A combination of torrential rain and a mountain of work to do keep us hermits most of the time, but expect an exclusive report on the Team PhaseSpace pilgrimage to the Great Stone, "one of Stretford's most easily overlooked landmarks", according to Wikipedia. Legend has it that the stone slowly sinks into the earth, and when it disappears altogether, the world will end. Perhaps the next Roland Emmerich project?
A Day in the Life by Erim - Friday, 20 November 2009
I'm the newest arrival to PhaseSpace HQ, having only moved in at the start of November, but found it pretty easy to get into a routine. As you'd expect, life here is pretty similar to life at Uni. The four of us lived in the same building in our last year together (or in Erik's case, only year), and at first glance little has changed; there remains a total lack of respect for kitchen hygiene, petty insults are the main format for affirming friendship with one another, and, even with short hair, Michael takes 45 minutes to shower. We've even managed to adorn the place with the student decoration of choice - tinnies - with a little help from OJ, who chose graciously to visit the wonderful town of Stretford on his vacation.
I've made my room into a clean little sanctum - the rest of the house is filthy beyond a salvageable point - so I like to wake up around 7:30, do my exercises, then watch an episode of Its Always Sunny In Philadelphia (which I recommend highly) before rolling downstairs to our communal office to start the day. Strangely enough we do actually get work done: right now Nathan works on coding for the site, Michael works on articles, and Erik and I work on designing the visuals for it. Even OJ got into the vibe and is kindly working on a financial model to help us monitor how effective our marketing budget will be. Work tends to wind down with dinner, after which we settle in the TV room where we're doing the Buffy marathon (Mike's idea) for a couple of hours before crashing.
In fact, it's not really that much like uni at all - even drinking is restricted to weekends, and that sure wasn't the case in my last year of work! Whether that will last remains to be seen however. There has yet to be a company night out - in fact the only leisure excursions we've taken have been to drive to the Burger King Drive-Thru - so we'll see what happens then. For now it certainly seems like a mature household, albeit a very very untidy one. Now if only that **** wasn't so inconsiderate of others' need to shower...
